1903 – 09 World Series Set $14.99 The inaugural World Series in 1903 between Boston and Pittsburgh begins the first of what will become classic match ups for over a century between National and American League teams. Cy Young and Honus Wagner, but Bill Dinneen wins 3 of his 4 starts including the final win making Boston the first World Series Champion in Baseball history. Chicago teams dominate World Series play in this decade winning 3 of the 6 World Series.
1910 – 19 World Series Set $24.99 Domination of the fall classic by the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Athletics as they combine to win 7 of the 10 World Series in this decade! Chief Bender wins 5 games in their wins and Babe Ruth emerges as a star for the Red Sox. However it’s all over shadowed by the scandal of the 1919 “Black Sox” as 8 players including Shoeless Joe Jackson were charged with conspiring to fix the World Series that year and all denied entrance into the Hall of Fame.
1920 – 29 World Series Set $24.99 New York City practically owned the World Series in this decade winning a total of 5 Championships between the Yankees and Giants. Of the 20 teams making an appearance throughout this period, those New York teams were in half of them. Babe Ruth makes his World Series debut sporting a Yankee uniform and doesn’t disappoint. Meanwhile Irish Meusel and Ross Youngs take the Giants to their 2 Titles. The Cardinals and Senators each make a couple of trips to the big show, but only 1924 Senators win one. Lead by Goose Goslin and Bucky Harris along with some stellar pitching by Tom Zachary.
1930 – 39 World Series Set $24.99 Yankees, Yankees, Yankees, Yankees, and more Yankees as they begin to cement their reputation in fall play with 5 Titles added to their franchise. A guy by the name of Joe DiMaggio makes his rookie debut and is awfully impressive batting .346 in the 1936 Series, though Jake Powell batted a cool .455 and dashed across the plate 8 times. Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing dazzled in the 1937 and 1938 Series’ leading the Yankees to more Championships. In 1939 Yankee pitching combined for a 1.22 team ERA bringing home the final World Series win of the decade making it 4 in a row! The Tigers, Athletics, Cubs, and Giants each make a couple appearances, but none could stand up to the powerful combination the Bronx bombers brought to the table.
1940 – 49 World Series Set $24.99 The Cardinals step in and share some of the glory with the Yankees; each team winning 3 World Series trophies for their cities. The Yankees wind up the decade with their 12th World Series Championship. Enos Slaughter’s “mad dash” in the bottom of the 8th from first to home on a single was the winning run in the 1946 Series. Hank Greenberg powers the Tigers to the 1945 Title. Meanwhile the Dodgers lose their 5th straight World Series in this decade despite a good effort by Pee Wee Reese in their appearances.
1950 – 59 World Series Set $24.99 The Yankees set a record by winning 5 straight World Series Titles! They win in 1949 and then run off 4 straight to achieve it. Then add 2 more Championships in 1956 thanks in part to 3 home run blasts by Mickey Mantle and he adds 2 more in 1958. The Dodgers win a couple more Titles, one while in Brooklyn and one in Los Angeles featuring terrific play by Gil Hodges in both. Aaron bats .393 knocking out 3 home runs to get the Braves past the Yankees in the 1957 Series. The unforgettable over the shoulder catch by Willie Mays along with a strict 1.46 team ERA helps capture a Championship for the New York Giants in 1954!
1960 – 69 World Series Set $24.99 Bill Mazeroski starts the decade with an historical World Series moment by slamming a winning walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th during game 7. The Mets close out the decade with an amazing finish and shock the world winning the Title in 1969. In between all that craziness the Yankees, Dodgers, and Cardinals win 2 more World Series each. Down 3 games to 1, the Tigers scratch and claw their way back into the Series in 1968 to win it as Lolich (3-0) defeats Gibson in game 7 thanks to his strong pitching effort and a string of hits by Tiger stars Northrup, Cash, Brown, and Freehan in the top of the 7th.
1970 – 79 World Series Set $24.99 Charlie Finley’s and his Oakland Athletics win the World Series 3 years running from 1972 to 1974. Sensational leader Catfish Hunter never lost a game during that stretch. “Mr. October”, Reggie Jackson clouts 3 long home runs as the Yankees take home another Title in 1977 and repeat as Champs in 1978. Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine wins a couple of back-to-back Titles of their own in 1975 and 1976. Clemente and Stargell lead the Pirates to World Series wins in 1971 and 1979 respectively. The decade was filled with heroic play by future Hall of Famers.
1980 – 89 World Series Set $24.99 The Dodgers were the only team to win more than 1 World Series this decade; capped in 1988 by the dramatic pinch hit bottom of the 9th come from behind home run by hobbled Kirk Gibson off the typically reliable Dennis Eckersley in Game 1. The Royals beat their same state rivals to win their first World Series in 1985. Phillies do the same winning their first title in 1980. Kirk Gibson played another big role in a World Series victory, this time for the 1984 Tigers that won it leading from wire to wire that season. Both the Brewers and Padres come up short in their first appearances. Worth noting the Yankees incredible streak of winning World Series each decade since the 1920’s comes to an end.
1990 – 99 World Series Set $24.99 The Braves make to the Series 5 times, but can only come away with 1 Title in this decade. The Yankees are back to form winning 3 more Championships giving them a total of 25 by the time 1999 was in the history books. Oakland starts the decade with their 3rd straight trip to the Fall Classics in 1990, but go quietly against the Reds. The Blue Jays win 2 in a row in 1992 and in 1993 with a walk-off home run by Joe Carter at home sending the Toronto crowd into frenzy! 1994 was sadly marred with a strike canceling any Series play. The Florida Marlins become the first Wild Card team to win a World Series, doing so in 1997. Jack Morris and the screamin’ Twins fans win it all in 1991, never losing a game a home including a game 7 bottom of the 10th victory.
2000 – 06 World Series Set $18.99 The makings of an incredible decade as the Red Sox and White Sox win their first World Series Titles in nearly 90 years plus the Diamondbacks and Angels win their first and even Houston makes an appearance! Marlins win their franchise 2nd, but not before shocking the Cubs in the National League Championship Series coming from behind thanks to another chance after a Cub fan tried to catch a foul ball headed for the stretched out glove of Alou. Oh by the way the Yankees normalize this decade a bit by kicking things off in 2000 with yet another Series Championship.
